I always felt that it would have been more appropriate for the teacher to apologize to me and the class, but no such justice existed in 1927–1928.  That public attention caused me to be elected student body president in both schools where I won student approval for opposing the arbitrary restraints on our social life as students.  I could not participate in those extra social activities that required any special expenditure.  There were a few students with some social conscience, but not enough to have any impact on the teaching profession.

Elevating blacks to top Party positions did not cure that problem.  Many blacks made it known that they were more concerned with ending discrimination so they could live as equal human beings here and now.  An insurance group, the International Worker's Order, serviced these language groups quite successfully for many years.  Then I discovered that most of the active leaders were unfamiliar with the academic background of the Party theories and relied instead on current orders and directives from the top national leaders.

They said they wanted to test my nerve, found me to be okay, and would recommend me for Party membership.  All this seemed unnecessary to me, but the leaders assured me they had to do it to safeguard the Party meetings from uninvited outsiders.  These classes kept me quite busy outside of my teaching duties.  Fred Walker arranged everything, including a stop at a farm near Woodland, Washington, run by some Finns, to whom he was related by marriage, where we were treated to sauna baths and banquetlike meals both going to Seattle and returning to Portland.
