However, recent studies have shown that residual stresses can be induced through mechanical means such as grinding and lapping in ceramics. 6 Another means of inducing residual stresses in engineered ceramics is through the development of thermal strains. 7' As a result of these recent findings, it has become increasing important to determine the existence and to characterize the type of residual stresses present in engineered components made of high grade ceramic materials.
