Coincident with dilatancy, cracking has been observed in green bodies. In the 40% ZS-6 composition, dilatant rheological behavior was prevalent and largely responsible for the reduced green density. Figure 4 and Table I1 provide the casting rates for the base and the lo%, 20%, and 30% ZS-6 additions. The casting rate of the 40% ZS-6 slip was not measured due to the dilatant behavior of the suspension. Table I1 also shows the premeability of the casts. The casting rates were proportional to the permeability, and both measures decreased with coarse particle addition.

Therefore, slurry 2 has a higher degree of flocculation compared to slurry 1. Figure 7 shows the effects of agitation on the viscosity measurement. Unlike slurry 1, the viscosity always drops in the beginning, and becomes stabilized in about 8-10 min, depending on the rpm. As shown in Fig. 7, the effect becomes stronger with decreasing rpm. At 50 rpm, the viscosity drops about 10% in 12 min (Fig. 7(a));at 5 rpm, the viscosity drops about 40% in 10 min (Fig. 7 ( d ) ) . A similar increase in viscosity in the beginning as in slurry 1 can never be observed at all four rpm’s for slurry 2.

Detailed examination of the rheological behavior of the slips generally reveals a curvature in the stress vs strain curves after the critical stress is exceeded, and the apparent viscosity decreases considerably until 7 values of about 100 s-l are reached.
